Green Tea

What a great day. I meet up with a friend at the mall and we did some mall walking. So much fun. I feel bad for her because I am sure you can tell from my postings I have a lot to say and just talk her ear off.

We always get a coffee before we start our walk through the mall so not only am I all ready a talking machine now I am hopped up on caffeine, can you image? She is a good sport and tells me she loves to listen.

We walked for about and hour and it is amazing how time flies when you have someone to distract you from your workout. One of the things we discussed on our walk was green tea and the caffeine content compared to coffee.

I love green tea and was interested to know what the difference was so I thought I would share some of the neat things I learned about green tea in my pursuit in finding out the caffeine.

From what I can gather from the many websites I checked out is green tea has between 7-75mg of caffeine per 8oz and coffee is 80-200mg per 8oz.

I am not big on drinking plain water I tend to want something with some flavor. Most times I just use my Keurig coffee maker to heat the water up instead of making coffee.

I have heard on T.V. shows that green tea is good for you because there are antioxidants in green tea. Green tea has catechins in it that are a powerful antioxidant. Antioxidants destroy free radical in you body. Free radicals can damage your body at a cellular level leaving vulnerable to cancer, heart disease, and other degenerative diseases.

Free radicals come from things like pollution, cigarette smoking, cholesterol, fat, meat, mental distress, alcohol, food preservatives, pesticides, environmental pollution, sunlight, chemotherapy and radiation. If you want to learn more about free radicals check this site out http://www.consumerhealth.org/articles/display.cfm?ID=19990303172533 .

Here are a list of the some benifits:

High cholesterol- lowers total cholesterol and raises HDL cholesterol (the way I remember which one is good and which is bad is HDL= happy cholesterol and LDL= lousy cholesterol).

Cancer- some study showed that it helped with breast cancer but as I search I saw a few pages that believed that it did not help. The studies show a great many cancers that it slowed or prevented. Check some of the links at the bottom if you would like more info on this.

♦Dieting/weight loss-  A study I read said that people given caffeine along with green tea extract burned more calories the those just given caffeine. Green tea is said to boost your metabolism and helps burn fat

Also green tea extracts containing polyphenols have been shown to stimulate fat oxidation, boosting the metabolic rate 4% without increasing HR(heart rate). IE: You burn more calories without doing anything.

There are many more benefits but these are the ones that seemed to show up the most in the studies and articles I read. Most of the studies said the results were strongest in people that drank 5 or more glasses a day.

Other than the listings below the only side effect for most people is the caffeine causing restless/sleepless nights. I am sensitive to caffeine so I have noticed if I drink it to close to bed time it will keep me up. I choose a calming camellia tea for night time.

Food Tip:  If you want to spice up your water drinking add green tea to your diet. I find in the summer a flavored ice tea hits the spot. You can also add fresh fruit to your favorite tea to change it up a bit.

Workout Tip: Try working out with a friend a few times a week. That way you are accountable/obligated to go and you will have good company to pass the time. You will be amazed at how time flies when your not thinking about it.
